CHARLOTTA GRUNEWALD

Charlotta Grunewald is self-taught in textile art, but has been sewing in one form or another all her life. She is now a retired obstetrician and associate professor of obstetrics and gynaecology. In addition to many years’ service as an obstetrician, researcher, teacher and manager, she also has experience from assignments in developing countries such as Afghanistan, Yemen and Pakistan. After my last assignment (Yemen, 2022), I began creating hand-embroidered images on fabric, based on photographs I had taken there. Five of these works were exhibited at the Liljevalchs Spring Exhibition in 2022, which encouraged me to continue creating. I draw my inspiration from my own photographs or images from the mass media. The most important thing for me is that the photographs move me – and, hopefully, others too. That is why they are often images of war (Ukraine, Gaza, Syria), but also images that inspire hope.
